Landmarks Contest #10

The Giant's Causeway

According to legend, these columns are the remains of a causeway built by a giant. The story goes that the Irish giant Finn MacCool was challenged to a fight by the Scottish giant Benandonner. Finn accepted the challenge and built the causeway across the North Channel so that the two giants could meet.

In actuality, the Giant's Causeway is an area of about 40,000 interlocking basalt columns, the result of an ancient volcanic eruption. The tops of the columns form stepping stones that lead from the cliff foot and disappear under the sea. Most of the columns are hexagonal, although there are also some with four, five, seven or eight sides. The tallest are about 39 ft high, and the solidified lava in the cliffs is 92 ft thick in places.

What are the latitude and longitude of The Giant's Causeway?

Congratulations to last week's winner, Nyaziel!

Landmarks Contest #7

This is a picture of Mecca.  Mecca is a city in Saudi Arabia, a country in the Middle East. The city was the birthplace of Muhammad, the founder of Islam. Muslims all over the world turn toward Mecca to pray five times each day. It is the world’s holiest city to Muslims. Because of that, only Muslims are allowed to enter Mecca. Every Muslim who is able to must make a religious journey, or pilgrimage, to Mecca at least once. The pilgrims visit the Great Mosque.

What is the name of the black box in the middle of the courtyard?

Write your answer on a piece of scrap paper and place it in the Raffle Box.  The drawing will take place on Day 1.  Congratulations to Tae-Su who won Contest #6!

Landmarks Contest #6!!!

This island, called Santorini, is the site of one of the largest volcanic eruptions in recorded history!!!!

The eruption occurred some 3,600 years ago. The eruption left a large caldera (crater) surrounded by volcanic ash deposits hundreds of meters deep. Where you see the water is actually the crater of the volcano. A popular theory holds that the Santorini eruption is the source of the legend of the lost city of Atlantis.  (The buildings in this picture were built thousands of years later.)

What country does Santorini belong to?  Write your answer on a scrap piece of paper (along with your name) and put it in the Raffle Box.  The drawing will be on Day 1.

Congratulations to Nyaziel for winning the last contest!

Landmarks Contest! #2

T
"Victoria Falls presents a spectacular sight of awe-inspiring beauty and grandeur on the Zambezi River, forming the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe. It was described by the Kololo tribe living in the area in the 1800’s as ‘Mosi-oa-Tunya’ – ‘The Smoke that Thunders’. In more modern terms Victoria Falls is known as the greatest curtain of falling water in the world.
Columns of spray can be seen from miles away as, at the height of the rainy season, more than five hundred million cubic meters of water per minute plummet over the edge, over a width of nearly two kilometers, into a gorge over one hundred meters below."
What is the latitude and longitude of Victoria Falls?
Write your answer (along with your name) and put it in the raffle box (by my phone).  On Day 1, I will draw a winner!  Congratulations to last week's winner, Joaquim!
