This island, called Santorini, is the site of one of the largest volcanic eruptions in recorded history!!!!
The eruption occurred some 3,600 years ago. The eruption left a large caldera (crater) surrounded by volcanic ash deposits hundreds of meters deep. Where you see the water is actually the crater of the volcano. A popular theory holds that the Santorini eruption is the source of the legend of the lost city of Atlantis. (The buildings in this picture were built thousands of years later.)
